Meet The Taste Makers

How the mothers of three style influencers were instrumental in shaping their appreciation for great design.

My mother used to run a boutique so you could say my love for fashion came from there. I would spend most summer holidays helping her with everything from unpacking new deliveries, merchandising stock to speaking to customers.

She always encouraged us to look closely at everything: the material, different cuts of fabric and the styles.  And I soon became obsessed by these details too. She would often take me to galleries but she also taught me to identify beauty everywhere and always put a lot of energy into teaching me how to develop my taste.  She would encourage me to find things that I liked and would make me stop and look at a beautiful landscape, furniture or painting or something that she had spotted in the street. It is thanks to my mother that I appreciate the little unexpected things.

GEORGE NORTHWOOD, Hair-styliSt & FOUNDER OF GEORGE NORTHWOOD SALON

I think you could say our family has always been creative. My grandmother was a hair dresser and my mother wasn't officially a seamstress but she made clothes to an incredibly high standard. I remember she would hide herself in the loft and she made me this Stars Wars jumper where she made all the appliqué space ships and stars by hand.

She really instilled in me the importance of quality and fit. Growing up I would have to  spend hours waiting for her in the John Lewis haberdashery and I used to wonder why she couldn't just buy clothes like every one else instead of making them herself,  but she really took pride in her outfits and what she wore, changing the buttons to make an outfit look better.

My mother has always had an enormous influence on my design taste and the way I look at things. She has always adored clothes which is probably part of the reason I became a stylist and got a job at Australian and then British Vogue as well as fashion director at the Saturday Times magazine. She has impressed upon me the importance of cut, shape, style, craftsmanship and colour – qualities I’ve carried through into the design of my own kaftan label.

She has always been flamboyant: she would do school pick up in plastic jeans or a pair of orange stilletos teamed with a Comme des Garçons dress whereby a hole had been cut out around the thighs. Or she would attend the Melbourne cup races immaculate in Chanel.

She was a model and then worked as the buyer and store manager for Hermes for 20 years in Melbourne and so instinctively knows what customers want too and is the most brilliant design advisor to me while building up my fashion brand.
