The Maker
(Who Makes It Happen)
Lack of living space and motherhood saw Cath Brown uprooting from London to the middle of Dartmoor. Here the co-founder of Feldspar reflects on the catalyst for launching her own brand, smartphone addiction and the need to watch grisly crime dramas.
What made you start Feldspar?
In 2016 we moved from a small flat in Hackney to a rambling farmhouse on Dartmoor in Devon, and so we needed to furnish our home. We began with making the essentials – a kitchen table and stools, and then moved onto ceramics as we had both our families coming for Christmas on the moor (that’s 20 people…), we needed lots of plates, bowls, mugs. We bought a wheel and kiln from a potter on the middle of the moor - he showed us the basics and then we experimented until we were happy with what we had made. And that was the beginning of Feldspar…
How has motherhood influenced your career?
We moved into a falling down farmhouse with no landline or internet – and a 3 month old baby. I fully intended to continue my career in architecture but soon realised that travelling to the nearest practice would mean leaving at 7am and returning 12 hours later and never seeing Milo. And so we decided to set up Feldspar which would never have happened otherwise.

Has moving to Devon changed the way you parent?
Milo spends more time outside than if we lived in London and there isn’t that pressure to buy the latest baby gadget.
How was motherhood changed you?
I’ve become a lot more patient, I never expected that.
How does the work/life juggling act happen in your household?
Ha, it’s still a balancing act. It’s busy. Despite living in the country side, I’m still always looking at email on my phone and I’m conscious not to project that image.
Your life hacks to ensure you still feel like you?
Time spent doing what you like is really important and I’m good at that: which means watching grisly crime dramas and seeing friends.
