Homo Faber 2024: The Journey of Life
The Journey of Life is the third edition of the Homo Faber Biennial, a celebration of contemporary craftsmanship in Venice curated by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship.
Its special focus this year is on exploring life's standout moments through the lens of craftsmanship. From childhood to travel, romance to dreams, the exhibition will be examining the talents behind the objects that accompany life's defining moments.
Set against the backdrop of the stunning San Giorgio Maggiore island in Venice, the exhibition is held at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini. Talented artisans from all over the world have been invited to take part and we're so delighted that this year they include the ceramic cartographer Loraine Rutt, whose exquisite miniature globes we showcase on The Garnered.
'My globes are about recognising that we’ve got a tiny, precious gem of a planet.'
Loraine Rutt became an apprentice cartographer at the age of 16 and worked for eight years at London University, drawing maps for research papers and teaching aids. This sparked a passion for cartography that she has had ever since, combining it with the ceramics that she studied at the prestigious Central Saint Martins school of art in London. She soon started developing her unique pocket globes that are exquisitely detailed and topographically correct.
Her miniature worlds will join a breathtaking array of exhibits all waiting to be discovered in the glow of Venice's autumn sunshine.
